I saw The Color Purple during its pre-Broadway debut in Chicago. I was a little worried about it, because the theme is very serious. The book is very emotionally involved as is the movie. I knew it had to be a challenge to make this serious show into something upbeat. It was amazing. I loved this whole show. You cry a little, are sad a little, but you also have this amazing foot tapping, hand clapping part. We left very upbeat and singing a lot of the songs.
